The MBA Program for Shipping and Ports Management

The Program

The purpose of the program is to train managers to master and be able to cope with the various activities in the shipping and ports sector, which are currently required by the economic community in Israel and in industries highly interacting with it.

Due to the geopolitical situation of the State of Israel, as 98% of the trade to and from it passes by sea and through its seaports, managerial knowledge and the training of managers in this field are of great importance. The government's decisions on the massive development of ports in Israel, reinforce the need to create a future managerial reserve, which has relevant academic training in these areas. The program prepares managers for senior positions in the shipping and ports sector, such as: shipping companies and ship agents, ports, industry and large companies engaged in foreign trade, international shipping companies, various consulting positions and relevant positions in government bodies.

The managerial knowledge that currently exists among managers and decision-makers in organizations and companies in the country, is limited and usually does not rely on structured learning. The field of shipping and ports seems to be characterized by a steady and slowly changing accumulation of knowledge, and therefore the expertise acquired in this field may, for the most part, be relevant over many years.

Students who complete the program, will be granted a Master of Business Administration degree (MBA) with a specialization in the management of shipping and ports, as the vision of this program is to impart advanced and modern knowledge in the shipping and ports areas. This unique program can address the current and future needs of the economy by training senior executives who are certified in these areas.

The program combines courses in the field of general business administration with courses unique to the field, such as: shipping and ports - structure and behavior; Demand and supply for shipping services; Shipping economy; Maritime transport strategies; Port operation and management strategies; The port as a link in the transport chain; Port planning and development.

The Students

The program is committed to excellence in training students to gain a broad and in-depth foundation for proficiency in shipping and port management. Graduates of the program will receive a master’s degree in business administration, with an appendix indicating a specialization in shipping and port management. This will allow students immediate application in their day-to-day work, and may also provide them with career benefits in the future.

The program is designed to equip students with management skills and expertise needed to deal with issues both in management positions at shipping companies and ports, and in positions that require expertise for professional and effective work with shipping and port entities.

Additional Unique Features of the Program

Work and study simultaneously: Courses are concentrated on two days a week: Thursdays afternoon and Fridays. This allows students to earn an MBA with minimal interruption to their work.

Short period of studies: Program duration is about a year and a half; the program stretches over seven study-periods, each of which consists of eight weeks and an exam week.

Qualitative study experience: The studies take place in a relatively small group. The heterogeneous academic background of the students and their diverse managerial experience enable the exchange of ideas among the participants.
A combination of theory and practice: The program combines academic lecturers with lecturers from the field, both from Israel and abroad, and emphasizes the practical orientation of the study material. The combination of theory and practice contributes to the quality of and the learning experience in the program.
